ABSTRACT. The metaphysics of recipes—identity especially—is a bit of a mess. The aim of this paper is to make a few renovations, and then take some steps towards resolution. Perhaps the biggest issue is that the proverbial ‘goalposts’ of the problem of recipe identity were not only erected in the wrong place, they were set up as the target for too many problems. As I’ll argue, ‘the’ problem of recipe identity isn’t one problem but many, and so there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Once the overhaul is complete, the extant views can be annexed to more specific problems, where they fare slightly better. Nevertheless, I believe there are stronger solutions at hand, and I offer brief versions of them.
