ABSTRACT. This talk is based on an article, written together with Marcin Serafin, in which we argue that examining various dimensions of temporality can offer fresh perspectives in the examination of food systems. While space and scale are dimensions that are frequently discussed, the impact of time on how we produce, distribute, consume, and discard food appears not sufficiently examined. The only major exception appears to be the periodization in the food regime theory, which however mainly focuses on spatial and power arrangements in specific historical periods. Addressing temporality is particularly illuminating when assessing global crises that impact the food security of whole countries, especially less developed ones. We focus in particular on the temporal aspects of the increasing financialization of global food systems and the impact of information and communication technologies. Moreover, a temporality perspective can connect the lived experiences of individual stakeholders and communities on the ground with seemingly more abstract global dynamics involving entities such as financial institutions, international organizations, and national governments.
